When you break it down, the number of songwriters and songs (artists) have to choose from, to choose one of (my songs) is an amazing feeling."įor more information, visit years ago, Nick Lowe had almost convinced himself that his days of making records were over. "To have other artists cover one of my songs or to have them sing it live, that's a great compliment. When my name's on this song, I want it to be something I'm proud of. "I have strong opinions about writing songs. There's nothing I like better than writing with friends I've made over the years. Richey said she's open to the collaborative songwriting process now, though early on she said writing with someone new "felt a little bit like a blind date. Not only has Richey worked with a laudable stable of producers - Bennett, Hugh Padgham (The Police, David Bowie) and Giles Martin, the son of Beatles producer George Martin - she's also attracted talent like Jason Isbell, Ryan Adams, Trisha Yearwood, Carl Broeme (My Morning Jacket) and Pat Sansone (Wilco) to work on her projects. Anyone can make a record now in their own home. "It was an amazing introduction to the record industry," said Richey of that eponymous record that included setlist standards "Just My Luck" and "Those Words We Said." "I have such high respect for Richard Bennett that if he said (I) should record standing on my head, I would stand on my head. An old university buddy, Bill Lloyd, then teaming with Radney Foster as a singing duo, convinced Richey to give Nashville a whirl and soon she was singing backup on records and writing, including a smash country hit for Foster, "Nobody Wins."Īnd that eventual first record deal at age 37? It was with Mercury Records and produced by Richard Bennett, the guitarist who has worked with Neil Diamond and Mark Knopfler and produced records for Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris, among others. The Zanesville, Ohio, native had played bars and coffeehouses while getting her degree in environmental education at Ohio University, but she abandoned playing music when she graduated and moved out west. Now 61, Richey had nearly given up on getting a record deal. "I got to play with a lot of old friends, like (steel player) Dan Dugmore and (guitarist) Doug Lancio, but I got to play with a lot of new friends, too." "He does that a lot (on records he produces)," she said. I tried to be open to anything."Īlso playing bass on the record, Jones employed three different tracking bands, though the sound is seamless for the listener, noted Richey. "('Edgeland') is so different than any record I've ever made. "But it was a really easy record to make and he was so great to work with. “I wasn’t sure at first if we’d be a good combo because he has such strong opinions, and I do, too," admitted Richey. The disc was produced by Brad Jones, who has been behind records by Josh Rouse, Hayes Carll and Marshall Crenshaw, though Richey didn't know what to make of the pairing initially. Richey's sophomore spin with Yep Roc Records, "Edgeland" has received near universal praise and again draws upon a coterie of high-minded collaborators, like label mate Chuck Prophet (with whom she penned Cyndi Thomson's top 40 country hit "I'm Gone") singing on "Pin A Rose" and "Whistle on Occasion," Maendo Sanz (who has written for the Eli Young Band and Lee Ann Womack) and Robyn Hitchcock (The Soft Boys). Supporting Richey on the tour are veteran Jack Ruch (electric guitar/vocals) and Jason Navo (bass guitar/vocals), who was once part of the New Orleans-based The Breton Sound and lately has been playing with Christian Lopez. Richey has been a purveyor of all those styles and more and now she is making a stop in Springfield as part of the Bedrock 66 Live! series at Bar None. "People don't know what box to put me in (musically). "It's a place where the rural area and the city blend together," said Richey, describing the term, during a recent phone interview. It's also an idea advanced by the British writer Marion Shoard about emergent landscapes on urban fringes. "Edgeland" is the title of Kim Richey's eighth studio album released in March after a five-year break for the singer/songwriter.
